WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?
Osteopathy is a gentle hands on form of complementary healthcare used to alleviate the symptoms of musculoskeletal pain. An Osteopath will aim to diagnose and treat the root cause of your condition while at the same time alleviating the symptomatic area.
Our Osteopaths use non invasive techniques such as soft tissue massage, rhythmical articulations, manipulations and mobilisations on areas such as muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons in order to improve circulation, promote tissue healing and speed recovery. Whether you have a nerve impingement, sciatica, frozen shoulder, a disc bulge or any other form of musculoskeletal pain, Osteopathy aims to help relieve your symptoms and restore you back to working order.
Your Osteopath may advise you on complimentary physical, mental and nutritional lifestyle attitudes as well as give you postural and ergonomic guidance. A personal treatment plan may include stretches and activities for you to perform in your own time, in conjunction with clinic treatments, to optimise your rehabilitation. Western Acupuncture, and kinesio tape strapping may be utilised as part of your treatment plan if you are happy to receive it.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
On your first consultation your Osteopath will take you through a series of questions relating to your symptoms, general health and past medical history in order to gain an overall picture of your presentation.
An examination will take place where your practitioner will assess the symptomatic area and may ask you to perform some simple movements. Some basic tests such as a neurological assessment or your blood pressure may be taken in order to build a diagnosis. In the event that you need to be referred to your GP or another healthcare practitioner your Osteopath will discuss this with you at the time; however in the majority of cases your Osteopath will be able to treat you. Every patient is different and you will be provided with a bespoke treatment suited to your needs.
Please be aware you may be asked to undress partially for treatment in some cases, however we want you to feel completely comfortable during treatment at Wandsworth Town Osteopathy and you will not be asked to undress any more than you are happy to. We advise bringing along with you some loose shorts or appropriate underwear. Gowns can be provided, and you are welcome to bring a chaperone along if you wish. Your modesty is respected at all times.
See our Q&A page for more information regarding what to expect.
